Why The Kashmir Files film IMDB rating drop from 10 to 8.3?

There are two kinds of ratings calculations on IMDB:

Arithmetic average

Vs.

Weighted average.

Since The Kashmir Files Bollywood's movie went viral, it was getting lots of 10/10 ratings! 😲😲😲

So, method used was weighted average, where each vote doesn’t have equal value. Prior, it was arithmetic average where each vote has equal value.

Hence, its rating dropped from 10 to 8.3 (from over 532,000 users). This helped preserve reliability of IMDB rating system.

Example:

Let’s say 1000 registered users voted. Each voted 10/10.

So, arithmetic average = sum of all ratings / number of voters = (1000*10) / 1000 = 10.

Assuming each user had equal impact on the ratings.

But let’s say,

500 users have a low impact of 0.4. Because they are less reliable users.

Remaining 500 users have a high impact of 1.26. Because they are more reliable users.

(0.4*500*10) + (1.26*500*10) / 1000.

(2000 + 6300)/ 1000 = 8.3

Does everyone agree with my calculations?

Takeaway: If you agree with the above analysis, I recommend following a similar weighted average process in Indian elections. So, their results are more accurate! 💡💡💡
